Early History

The Heyfield Bowls club was convened at a public meeting in 1956 and Mr J. Barton was elected President. Land was acquired from the Railways, and small mens’ and ladies’ rooms were built. The club affiliated with the East Gippsland Bowls Association.

At the first Opening Day on 1st December 1956, a large marquee was hired where afternoon tea was served. A copper and electric urn was plugged into a power point on a pole. Members brought folding chairs and beach umbrellas. The crockery was borrowed from the Heyfield Football Club.

Such progress was made that a clubhouse was built in 1957, although a lot of furniture had to be borrowed from members for any tournaments or events. Membership subscriptions were 2 pounds 2 shillings per annum.

In 1960 a septic tank was installed and the club now had inside bathrooms.

In 1962 the first fridge was purchased for the kitchen.

The club grew in numbers and was successful in many pennant grand finals.

In 1980 a new clubhouse was erected, and membership had grown to 100 men and 50 women.
